Background

For investors concerned with wealth preservation, physical gold is a core asset in their portfolios.

However, there is often a significant disconnect between the “spot price” reported in financial news and the “retail price” offered by local dealers for coins.

This price spread consists of dealer premiums, fabrication costs, and varying consumption taxes by region.

While many existing financial apps excel at tracking stock portfolios or viewing global commodity charts, we noticed a lack of lightweight, mobile-first tools specifically designed for decision-making at the actual point of sale (POS).

Determining whether a specific gold coin is fairly priced typically requires instantly processing complex mental calculations, including unit conversions (troy ounces to grams), exchange rates, and tax calculations, which has been a heavy burden for buyers.

Objective

The primary objective of Gold Finger 21 is to eliminate the complex mental arithmetic required across the counter.

The goal of this project was not to build a complex platform for derivative trading, but to provide a practical tool, akin to a “digital pocket-knife,” that condenses the functions needed by collectors and investors of physical assets.

Specifically, we aimed for a tool that instantly provides answers to two critical questions.

1. “How much premium am I paying over the intrinsic bullion value for this item?”
2. “What is the total current market value of my physical gold holdings?”

Intended Users

This application is designed targeting the following demographics.

• Physical Stackers: Individual investors accumulating gold bullion for long-term wealth preservation.
• Numismatists: Collectors who need to clearly separate and manage the bullion value of a coin from its numismatic value based on rarity.
• International Buyers: Buyers who navigate different jurisdictions and currency zones, such as Japan (grams/JPY), Singapore (grams/SGD), and the US (ounces/USD), and require rapid currency and unit conversions.

Functionality & User Experience

The app consists of two streamlined features: a Calculator and a Portfolio (Gold Bags).

The Premium Calculator

This is the core feature of the app.

The user interface is designed to allow the input of item specifications and the asking price with minimal steps.

The system cross-references the inputted numbers with real-time market data to instantly perform a value comparison.

It automates complex calculation logic, including regional pricing factors (taxes and premiums), presenting the user with a cost-efficiency evaluation without making them aware of the underlying formulas.

Gold Bags (Portfolio Management)

This feature provides a dynamic overview of the user’s holdings.

Rather than a mere static list, it calculates the total real-time market valuation of the assets.

By managing the complexity of asset tracking and centrally visualizing the bullion value in the user’s chosen base currency, it enables them to accurately grasp their asset status at all times.

Seamless Sync

To support users moving between mobile and desktop environments, the app implements secure synchronization functionality.

This ensures that portfolio information updated on a smartphone is instantly reflected on tablets and desktops, maintaining a unified user experience without the need for manual data migration.
